I support a simpler pathway to access an IEP for my student with Dyslexia. With talk of Full Funding of IDEA, I want to make sure that my family and our school has access to extra federally provided funds to benefit my students success.
Texas over reliance on 504 evaluations is effectively removing my legal rights to work as part of the school team that makes educational decisions about my student, interfering with my family being able to work more closely with our school to collaborate in a meaningful way had we been evaluated under IDEA law. 504 first also separates us from additional federal funds available to offset costs and IDEA funds are expected to greatly increase. These extra funds coming from the federal level can greatly supplement The Texas Dyslexia Allotment passed last year - which alone is not enough to provide intensive supplemental reading instruction or ensure my students needs are being met.
State policy must change to be clear,
The evaluation process for students with dyslexia must start under IDEA Child Find.
IEP's must include goals and objectives for Dyslexia interventions.
Parents rights to participate in Initial ARD team decision must be restored.
