EDUCATE

Decoding Dyslexia Mission is to Educate Advocate and Legislate. We Educate by supporting, hosting  and contributing to community events. We have a strong online presence where we share evidence based advocacy and well vetted resources to families, students, educators and policy makers.

ADVOCATE

We Advocate in the following ways; we work to advocate for best practices and resources with local, regional and statewide decision makers. Many of us serve on boards and are active in our school board, PTA's, professional advocacy organizations and attend state and federal level policy forums.

LEGISLATE

We feel most issues are best addressed at the local level, but at times systemic issues require legislative action. We work hard to balance our efforts and work collaboratively at all levels to ensure dyslexic students and their families have the tools and resources available to succeed.

Decoding Dyslexia is a network of parent-led grassroots movements across the country concerned with the limited access to educational interventions for dyslexia within the public education system. We aim to raise dyslexia awareness, empower families to support their children and inform policy-makers on best practices to identify, remediate and support students with dyslexia

Key Reminders

Dyslexia is an Unexpected Difficulty Learning to Read - Related Disorders like Dysgraphia effect writing legibly - and both effect spelling - Generally listening comprehension is at or above grade level. Formal definition go to DyslexiaIDA.org/definition-of-dyslexia/

Dyslexia and Related Disorders do not stem from poor teaching, it is not due to lack of intelligence, nor is it due to a delay in maturation - kids will not out grow it; Dyslexia is a neurobiological brain difference apparent at birth, it is well researched and hereditary. Not all reading struggles are dyslexia but it is by far the most common cause of reading struggles.

EDUCATE YOUR SELF AND UNDERSTAND THE WARNING SIGNS Struggles to link letters to sounds, Struggles to sound out words, The Child IS NOT meeting age appropriate milestones in reading or spelling. Examples https://www.greatschools.org/gk/grades/kindergarten/

ASK FOR A FULL EVALUATION UNDER IDEA - IN WRITING Dyslexia is a qualifying disability under the Funded Federal Law IDEA - within the SLD category. IDEA protects parents and student rights to a Free and Appropriate Education and holds schools accountable to a higher standard. Knowing Why a Child Struggles to Read is Vital and a Full Evaluation will highlight areas that need attention and areas of strength. Unlike section 504 - IDEA Parents are mandated members of the decision making process at every stage.

#SAYDYSLEXIA If your child is determined to be dyslexic, it’s important for you and your child's school to use the term - it helps guide an appropriate learning environment.

DYSLEXIA IS NOT TIED TO INTELLIGENCE -  Dyslexics are at or above the intelligence level of their non dyslexic peers - Keep your expectations very high and be sure to foster their strengths and interests.
